Quick Takeaways on how to rebuild your life after divorce
- Time doesn't heal everything: Just waiting around won't fix your confidence or stop you from repeating the same mistakes. Healing takes actual work.
- Protect your morning: Don't reach for your phone the second you wake up. Spend a few minutes just "being" before you start your endless to-do list.
- Feed your brain good stuff: Swap out doom-scrolling and negative news for inspiring podcasts or audiobooks while you drive or clean.
- Set the rules: Boundaries are not about controlling your ex; they are about deciding what behaviour you will accept in your life.
- Use the 60-second pause: When your phone blows up with angry texts, you do not have to reply right away. Take back your power by choosing when you respond.
We are often told that time heals all wounds, but for a single mum dealing with a messy divorce, waiting around just keeps you stuck. To actually rebuild your life, you have to take action. Control what you listen to, set firm rules with your ex, and use simple tools like the "pause" to protect your peace. You don't need hours of free time to do this; you can start taking your power back right now, right in the middle of your daily chaos.
Why the "Time Heals" Advice Is a Trap
When your marriage falls apart, well-meaning friends will often tell you, "Just give it time". They might tell you to "get over it" or say things could be worse. But when you are the one packing the lunchboxes, managing the laundry, and figuring out how to pay the bills on a single income, just waiting for time to pass is a trap.
Time alone does not fix your shattered confidence. If you do not actively work on your own healing, you carry that heavy baggage right into your next chapter.
Sandra, the founder of Women on Transition, knows this firsthand. After her first marriage broke down, she didn't do the deep work to heal. Because she still struggled with low self-worth, she ended up in a second marriage that also ended in a messy divorce 12 years later. She learned the hard way that you are the common denominator in your life. To break the cycle, you have to focus on building yourself back up.
"Healing does not just heal with time. You know, there's a lot of old, bitter, angry people out there resentful and triggered by their ex... because they're caught up in the past and not healing and growing." — Sandra
How to Heal When You Have Zero Free Time
It is easy to say you need to "work on yourself." It is much harder to actually do it when you are totally tapped out and running on zero energy. You might barely have five minutes to drink a cup of coffee while it is still hot.
The good news is you do not need hours of free time to start healing. You can squeeze it into the messy parts of your day. Sandra started her healing journey while driving three hours to drop her kids off for visits with their dad. Instead of listening to sad songs or negative news on the radio, she loaded up her CD player with stories of people overcoming massive struggles.
You have to change what you feed your brain. You can also start writing daily affirmations on your bathroom mirror. When you brush your teeth, look at yourself and say, "I am enough" or "I am a great mum". It might feel silly at first, but it slowly trains your mind to believe it.
Another simple trick is changing your morning routine. Instead of waking up and immediately checking your phone for messages, leave it alone. Lay in bed for just a few extra minutes. Decide who you want to be that day before you start focusing on what you have to do.
Setting Unbreakable Boundaries
Setting boundaries is one of the hardest things for a single mum to do, especially when your confidence is low. But without them, you will feel completely out of control.
A boundary is not a weapon you use to control your ex-partner. It is simply a rule you create for your own life about what you will and will not put up with. You have to decide your non-negotiables.
You also have to remember that your kids are watching everything you do. They are 50% you and 50% their dad. When they hear you badmouth him, it hurts them deeply. Having strong boundaries means you act like the adult, even when your ex does not. It means you stop fighting in front of the kids and you show them what emotional strength looks like.
The 60-Second "Pause" Protocol
So, what do you do when your ex blows up your phone? Sandra remembers a day she walked away from her phone and came back to 50 missed calls and 130 abusive text messages. It put her straight into a state of panic and trauma.
This is when you need to use the power of the "pause". When the phone starts pinging, your heart races and you want to fight back or freeze. But you can choose to take back your control.
- Stop and breathe: You do not have to reply right away.
- Send a holding text: If you need to, just say, "I will think about this and get back to you tomorrow".
- Set a schedule: Tell your ex you will only check and respond to messages at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
- Stick to it: Do not jump every time the phone dings. Stop giving him free rent in your head.
By doing this, you are telling him that you are still open to talking about the kids, but you are doing it on your own terms.
Reclaiming Your Joy and Fun
Ultimately, doing this work is about getting your life back. A lot of single mums forget how to even have fun. When Sandra asked women what their hobbies were, many said they were just trying to survive the day.
At the Women on Transition events, they teach women how to live big again. One woman went to a retreat and danced for the first time in 25 years because her ex-husband had made fun of her dancing at their wedding. They take women quad biking and remind them that the sky is the limit. You do not have to just survive this chapter. You completely deserve to step into a brilliant, happy, and fun next act.
"Life did not go to plan. However, we get to choose every step from here... we can choose how we do things differently moving forward and be kind to ourselves while we're learning." — Sandra
