10 Great party themes for your 10 year old.

As we age, so do our children. Each passing year brings new growth and changes. With each birthday, planning a celebration that will bring joy to our little ones becomes a little more difficult.

The tenth birthday brings a new set of considerations. Before, a simple party with just family and a friend or two was probably enough for your little one. Now, it’s likely that they’ll want more friends than family in attendance.

To help you plan an age appropriate party for your child, here are 10 ideas for a 10th birthday celebration.

GREAT PARTY THEMES FOR YOUR 10 YEAR OLD

1. A SLEEPOVER

Boys and girls alike enjoy a traditional sleepover. The first step to a successful sleepover is selecting how many friends to invite. The key is to only invite your child’s closest friends. This is not a party for the entire class. Allow your child to help you choose some activities for their party that will be fun for their friends while keeping chaos to a tolerable level for you. Some ideas include board game tournaments, party games like Would You Rather?, Truth or Dare, or Charades, karaoke, or a traditional pillow fight.

2. A VIDEO GAME PARTY

Around the age of 10 is when some children really begin to enjoy playing video games. Have your child invite friends who enjoy the same games and allow them time to play together. You could also have each guest bring their favourite video game, or you could purchase a new game for your child to share with friends. If you purchase a new game, use the game as inspiration for your decor. Provide finger foods as gaming fuel.

3. A TEA PARTY

Primarily appealing to girls, a tea party is a somewhat sophisticated party idea. Perhaps make it a backyard party by using a patio table or foldable gaming table. Adorn the table with a pretty table cloth, and set it with a pretty tea set with matching cups and saucers. Serve finger sandwiches and tea cakes to your guests. Have the guests dress for the occasion in fancy clothes and jewellery. An idea for a party favour is costume jewellery that you provide the guests to wear at the party and take home with them.

4. A POOL PARTY

A pool party is fun year-round if you have access to an indoor pool. Plan pool activities like races or games, such as Marco Polo. Think summer when planning the menu. Colorful sunglasses, inflatable beach balls, and silly straws make fun party favours.

5. AN ART PARTY

Art takes on many forms. Painting, sculpture, and pottery are examples of things to do at an art party. Art parties can be held at home or at a studio that provides a party space. You provide the supplies needed for creativity (or choose a studio with a party package), and the children create their own party favours.

6. A SKATING PARTY

Whether you choose roller skating or ice skating, a skating party is usually a hit with the 10-year old crowd. Many roller rinks or ice rinks have party packages that include food and drinks for the children. Skating allows the children to work off excess excitement and energy too.

7. A BOWLING PARTY

Bowling encourages friendly competition while letting children enjoy taking turns as a team. Divide your party guests into two teams and see which team bowls a higher scoring game. Like roller rinks, some bowling alleys offer complete party packages.

8. A MOVIE NIGHT

At home or in the theatre, a movie party is a fun way to celebrate a birthday. If hosting a movie party at home, rent or buy the newest release that your child is yearning to see. Provide popcorn and movie theatre inspired snacks. Decorate with items inspired by the movie. Send your guests home with individual popcorn buckets or a goody bag with popcorn and candy for their next at home movie night.

9. A BACKYARD CAMPOUT

A variation of the traditional sleepover, the backyard campout is especially appealing to boys. Set up tents in the backyard. Have your guests bring sleeping bags. Hot dogs and s’mores are good campout food choices. For party favours, you could give everyone miniature flashlights.

10. A SUPERHERO OR OTHER CHARACTER PARTY

While 10-year olds are quickly approaching the dreaded teenage years, they are still young enough to enjoy a character or superhero themed party. Provide costumes for your guests, or encourage them to wear their own, and let everyone exercise their imaginations while acting like their chosen character. Use your theme to inspire your decorations and your food.

Regardless of your theme, careful party planning can help ensure a fun time for your 10-year old. Remember, when you send invitations you must provide guests with detailed party information, including the theme and your full contact details. Use your child’s interests as your guide to choosing the perfect party theme.
