May is Women’s Health Month! A gentle nudge for us to pause, breathe, and remember that our health matters too. Yes, yours. The woman who’s always putting herself last on the list, who juggles the house, the bills, the school runs, the fevers, the tantrums, and everything in between.
As single mums, we carry so much. And often, looking after ourselves comes with guilt or lands in the “next time” pile. But here’s a reminder: you can’t pour from an empty cup. This month is your permission slip to refill it.
And because May is also Coeliac Awareness Month, I thought it was the perfect time to share some gorgeous gluten-free recipes that are easy, kid-friendly, and gut-loving. Whether you're gluten-intolerant, coeliac, or just curious about how your body feels without it, there's no better time to give it a go.
What Is the Purpose of Women’s Health Month?
Women’s Health Awareness Month is about one powerful idea: you matter. Not just your ability to keep tiny humans alive, stretch the grocery budget until payday, and educate your kids, but you, as a whole, vibrant, complicated woman with a body that deserves care and attention.
This month is about shining a light on the health issues that affect women the most — and making sure we treat our well-being as a priority, not a luxury. Many women face increased risk of developing conditions like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and obesity, especially as we move through perimenopause and midlife. Others may struggle with an undiagnosed disorder, ongoing infection, mental health challenges, or being diagnosed with breast cancer, one of the most common cancers among women.
Important Health Screenings for Women's Health Month
It’s crucial that we make time for checkups because the earlier we identify an issue, the better the outcome. Consider this your loving push to book that appointment and health screenings you’ve been avoiding. Whether it’s for your heart, hormones, or pelvic health, prevention is better than cure.
Here are a few important health checks to consider booking in this month:
- Pap smear and HPV screening (to check for risk of cervical cancer)
- Breast check or mammogram (especially if you're over 40 or have a family history of breast cancer)
- Skin check
- Iron levels and vitamin D
- Thyroid function test
- Mental health check-in (chat with your health care provider about anxiety, depression, or simply feeling “not quite right”)
- STI screening (because safe is sexy, no matter your age or relationship status)
- Bone density test (especially for women in midlife or at risk of osteoporosis)
- Cardiovascular and blood pressure screening (especially important as heart disease remains a top killer among women)
Think of it like preventive care for your car — ugh, I normally hate this analogy! — Except this is your body. It’s a heck of a lot more precious, so take care of it.

Why May is Also the Perfect Time to Try Gluten-Free
Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition that affects 1 in 70 Australians. But 4 out of 5 people don’t even know they have this serious health condition. For many women, coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity can show up as common health issues like chronic bloating, fatigue, skin irritation, or even unexplained fertility issues that can impact the ability to become pregnant.
Going gluten-free might sound like a wellness trend. But if you frequently suffer from bloating, digestive discomfort, or mood swings, a gluten-free diet might help you tune into what your body really needs. It doesn’t mean giving up joy or flavour (I’ll prove that with the recipes I’ve got coming!). It just means slowing down and noticing how food affects your body, physically and emotionally.
Even if you’re not coeliac, trying a gluten-free lifestyle can be a worthwhile experiment in mindfulness and nourishment. It can reduce inflammation, ease gut discomfort, and help you reconnect with how food actually makes you feel. It’s one small tip that could make a big difference in your overall health.
And let’s be honest: when your belly feels better, everything else feels a little lighter too. Along with physical activity, vaccinations, and regular full-body checkups, here are some gluten-free recipes to try for Women's Health Month 2025.
