Best eco friendly laundry detergents in Australia 2023

Eco friendly laundry detergents

I’ll admit that I have always been dubious about earth friendly cleaning products, mainly because I didn’t think they’d do the job and would therefore be a waste of money.

Recently, and with encouragement from some eco-warrior family members, I’ve made the switch … and have not looked back.

I can honestly tell you that many eco-friendly products work even better than their chemical-packed counterparts. Which genuinely surprised me.

But, I’ve not yet switched my laundry detergent. For this reason, I need to to do some research and I thought why not share it with others looking to lessen their carbon footprint.

Here’s what you need to know about eco friendly laundry detergents that are safe for the environment.

What is an eco friendly laundry detergent?

An eco friendly laundry detergent is a greener alternative to traditional detergents that contain non-biodegradable chemicals and other ingredients that leech into our water supply and pollute the environment.

They use ingredients and packaging that are gentle on clothes, our skin and the environment.

No laundry detergent can be truly “green” or have zero impact on the environment, but the use of eco friendly options (and doing less laundry in general) can go a long way in helping families save the planet.

What are the benefits of going green with my laundry?

  • Gentler on the skin and clothes. The absence of harsh chemicals makes greener detergents gentler on the skin and on your clothes. Perfect for people with allergies or skin sensitivities.
  • Save money by using less detergent. Many eco friendly laundry detergents are highly concentrated so you need only a small amount per wash/load.
  • Reduce water pollution. Eco friendly detergents do not contain chemicals like phosphates that end up in waterways and sewage systems.
  • Reduce plastic waste. Eco friendly detergents use biodegradable/compostable packaging or plastic packaging that can be reused and recycled.

What to look for when buying eco laundry products?

Ingredients: Check the ingredients list of your detergent. Look for words like non-toxic, biodegradable, hypoallergenic, vegan, cruelty-free, and ethically sourced. Avoid detergents with a long list of harsh chemicals like phosphates and parabens.

Certifications: Look for certifications on the label indicating that the product has passed safety checks and standards.

Packaging: Choose detergents with biodegradable, compostable, or reusable packaging. Many brands offer refills so you don’t have to buy the same plastic container when you run out.

Cost per wash: Some eco friendly options tend to be pricier than traditional detergents. Compare prices and cost per wash to get the best deal.
