Clever resume hacks to get the job you want

Use a photo

Including a photo on your resume is a simple yet effective hack that can help you stand out from other applicants.

A professional headshot can make a big difference. It makes you seem more approachable and personable, and it can help the hiring manager remember you better.

When choosing a photo, make sure it is recent, high-quality, and professionally taken. Avoid using selfies or casual photos as they may not give off the professional image you’re trying to convey.

Use Canva (for free)

Canva is a powerful graphic design tool that can assist you in creating a visually stunning resume without the use of costly design software.

It gives you the option of selecting from a variety of templates and customising them with your own text and images. You can also include charts, diagrams, and other visual elements to showcase your skills and qualifications.

I have found that when I use Canva to design my resume; it looks more polished and professional, which gives me an edge over other applicants.

Tailor it to the job you are applying for

Tailoring your resume to the specific job you’re applying for is one of the most important things you can do when applying for a job. This means highlighting the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job and leaving out anything that isn’t.

When tailoring your resume, be sure to use the same language and terminology as the job posting, and use keywords that apply to the job.

The first time I did this I was successful in securing an interview as it helped me distinguish myself from other applicants. Now, I do it whenever I am applying for work.

Include a cover letter

A cover letter is a great way to introduce yourself and explain why you are the best fit for the job. It’s also an excellent opportunity to showcase your writing skills and personality.

In your cover letter, be sure to mention specific skills and experiences that make you the best candidate for the job, and explain how you can contribute to the company’s goals.

I always include a cover letter with my resume and it has helped me get interviews for jobs I may have otherwise not been considered for.

Make it eye-catching

Your resume must stand out among the hundreds of others that the hiring manager will review.

One way to do this is by using a unique design or layout. You can choose a template that differs from the traditional resume format, or use colours, images, and other design elements to make it more eye-catching.

Try to use action verbs and quantifiable achievements to make your resume more impactful. Instead of saying:

“Managed a team of 15 people,”

I’ll say:

“Managed a team of 15 people, resulting in a 25% increase in productivity.”

Use video resume

Video resumes are a new and innovative way to showcase your skills and personality.

Instead of a traditional written resume, you can create a short video of yourself explaining why you are the best candidate for the job. This can help you stand out and show off your communication skills.

When creating your video resume, keep it brief and to the point, and dress and act professionally.

Use social media

In today’s digital age, social media is a powerful tool that you can use to your advantage when job hunting.

You can use LinkedIn to showcase your professional experience and connect with potential employers. Twitter and Instagram can also be used to promote your personal brand and interests. When using social media to job hunt, be sure to keep your profiles professional and avoid posting anything controversial or inappropriate.

Connect with professionals in your industry and take part in relevant groups and discussions. This can help you expand your network and increase your visibility among potential employers.

Use the resume summary

The resume summary, also known as a professional summary, is a powerful tool that can help you highlight your most important skills and experiences.

It’s usually a brief statement at the top of your resume that summarises your qualifications and highlights your major accomplishments.

When writing your resume summary, be sure to use strong action verbs and quantifiable achievements to make it more impactful.

Use storytelling

Storytelling is a powerful technique that can help you stand out from the crowd. Use it to tell a story about a specific accomplishment or experience that showcases your skills and qualifications.

A hiring manager once told me this made her get a strong impression of me and therefore differentiate my resume from other candidates.

Use specific details and anecdotes in your resume storytelling to make it more engaging and relatable.

Use keywords

Keywords are an important part of any resume because they assist employers and applicant tracking systems in finding your resume when they are looking for candidates.

Include keywords such as job titles, skills, and industry terms throughout your resume. Use the same language and terminology as the job posting when using keywords, and use keywords that are relevant to the job.

Use online courses and certifications

Online courses and certifications can be an excellent way to demonstrate your knowledge and qualifications. Use them to demonstrate your dedication to learning and professional development.

When listing online courses and certifications on your resume, include the course title, the institution that provided it, and the date you completed it. Include any relevant skills or knowledge you gained from the course.

Utilise infographics

Infographics are an excellent way to present information in a visually appealing and easy-to-understand format.

Use them to highlight your qualifications and skills, or to tell a story about a specific accomplishment. This can help you make a good impression on the hiring manager and set yourself apart from the competition.

When creating an infographic for your resume, use clear and simple designs, as well as images and charts to convey information in an understandable manner.
