I’ve been on both sides of the fence when it comes to resumes. I’ve worked in an HR department with resumes crossing my desk daily, and I’ve used heaps of different resume styles to get myself into that interview chair. I know what works and what doesn’t.

When choosing a photo, make sure it is recent, high-quality, and professionally taken. Avoid using selfies or casual photos as they may not give off the professional image you’re trying to convey.

Use Canva (for free)

Canva is a powerful graphic design tool that can assist you in creating a visually stunning resume without the use of costly design software.

It gives you the option of selecting from a variety of templates and customising them with your own text and images. You can also include charts, diagrams, and other visual elements to showcase your skills and qualifications.

I have found that when I use Canva to design my resume; it looks more polished and professional, which gives me an edge over other applicants.

Tailor it to the job you are applying for

Tailoring your resume to the specific job you’re applying for is one of the most important things you can do when applying for a job. This means highlighting the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job and leaving out anything that isn’t.

The first time I did this I was successful in securing an interview as it helped me distinguish myself from other applicants. Now, I do it whenever I am applying for work.

In your cover letter, be sure to mention specific skills and experiences that make you the best candidate for the job, and explain how you can contribute to the company’s goals.

I always include a cover letter with my resume and it has helped me get interviews for jobs I may have otherwise not been considered for.

Make it eye-catching

Your resume must stand out among the hundreds of others that the hiring manager will review.

One way to do this is by using a unique design or layout. You can choose a template that differs from the traditional resume format, or use colours, images, and other design elements to make it more eye-catching.

Try to use action verbs and quantifiable achievements to make your resume more impactful. Instead of saying:

“Managed a team of 15 people,”

I’ll say:

“Managed a team of 15 people, resulting in a 25% increase in productivity.”

Use video resume

Instead of a traditional written resume, you can create a short video of yourself explaining why you are the best candidate for the job. This can help you stand out and show off your communication skills.
