Who needs a shopping centre when there is a massive range of women’s clothing available online?

Personally, I find shopping for clothes online way more enjoyable than shopping in-store. There are heaps of advantages which explains why so many people are now choosing to scroll from their sofa and click to buy without physically trying anything on. 

I rarely pay for postage, returns are easy (often free) and the quality and range of sizes will impress the most avid shopper. Bigger online clothes stores have handy zoom buttons to drill in and check out every detail of the piece I am planning to buy, and videos give me an excellent feel for how clothes will look when worn. Plus, I get the feeling that retailers want me to purchase online. For this reason, they offer incentives such as money off, free shipping, and exclusive online specials. Best of all, I get to try the clothes on in the privacy of my home and see if they work with the rest of my wardrobe.

Win. Win. Win.

But with so much choice, where do you start?

MY LITTLE BUYING GUIDE

Note: As wonderful as online shopping is, I find it is easy to get carried away. Here is some advice from an average shopper (me) to shop smart online:

• Always refer to the sizing guide before you buy. All stores have different sizing. Getting it right the first time alleviates the hassle of a return … take it from someone who has made hundreds of unnecessary returns.
• Check the currency on the website you are browsing. It is all too easy to think you are paying in AUD when it’s actually USD. This can be an expensive mistake which I will admit I have made more than once. If you are happy to pay in a different currency, calculate the exchange rate so you know how much will come out of your account. 
• If you need your item of clothing by a certain time, be sure to check how long delivery takes to avoid frustrating no-shows. In many cases, you can pay more for a faster delivery option.
• Be aware of the return procedure as these vary from site to site. Check whether you can return items and if you get a full refund or a voucher to spend in-store. Many online clothing stores, but not all, charge a fee for a return depending on where you drop your return parcel. For example, some of the major stores charge me around $9 to drop a return at a Post Office, whereas if I drop it to ParcelPoint it is $1. It’s a nice saving if you read the small print. 
• Make use of the brilliant review systems on the big online clothing superstores. Get purchasers’ thoughts on the pieces of clothing you are considering, and even see photos of them being worn. I find this particularly handy for sizing as people suggest whether clothing comes up big or small, which is the one question I always have when picking a size.
• Be savvy and don’t spend more than you have to. Simple online shopping hacks that can save you money include subscribing to emails so I know when my favourite online clothing store has a sale and checking for coupon codes to add at the checkout.
