      Hi everyone,

My son has recently diagnosed with lymphoma. My ex has nothing to do with him (his choice) but pays child support through csa. I am struggling to afford his treatment as it is and looking ahead there are significant out of pocket expenses. I know I will likely shoulder them all but is there any way I can make my ex help pay for his son’s treatment. He has already said no and that he pays his share already and doesn’t understand the out of pocket expenses associated with his care as well as the time I will have to take off to care for him. I’m struggling emotionally but I know I need to be strong for my son.

      What can I do?

Not sure what the legal aspect of this is. But maybe you could draw up a list of expected expenses for your ex as he might not understand what’s involved.

I am so sorry to hear this news about your son.

Phone Child Support because I believe they can do something regarding extra expenses. I am not entirely sure, but def worth checking.

Have a look at this article which say:

Special circumstances. A change in the overall child support assessment can be made in special circumstances, such as if the child has large and unusual medical expenses. The recipient needs to apply and Child Support will review the case. They’ll seek detailed input from both parties.

Make a call to both centrelink and child support to find out your options here. You might be able to get a carer allowance also. All the best to you and your son.
